Final Fantasy XIV’s last expansion, “Heavensward”, was smooth throughout its launch window, leaving no reason for players to be worried about the “Stormblood” launch.
On June 20 – the expansion’s full release date – the Final Fantasy XIV website released news that they had been targeted by DDoS attacks throughout Early Access – and into the “Stormblood” official release. The development team had this to say about the attack.
These attacks have caused massive outages for the game’s servers, impacting network equipment and connections. Because of this, gamers have been experiencing long load times, which has caused login difficulties.
… Due to this attack, our game servers, network equipment and network connection are being hit with heavy load at an extensive level, which is causing a disconnection from the game and login difficulties…. We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing.
